Advent Stories
5. Let's go sledging!
It was the last day of term. The weather had turned icily cold and now the cloud laden sky delivered a thick covering of snow. Two weeks of festive holidays, topped off by turning the streets into a winter wonderland. The deluge of snow had been so quick and heavy that no one had the time to prepare for it. Roads were impassable, the pavements quickly became lethal ‘bobsleigh’ runs on the downhill walk to the shops.
None of them had a sledge. Snow was so rare that old wooden sledges had long been consigned to the dump! Initiative was required, if the group were to take advantage of the black run, created down Monument Hill.
By the time the four reached the summit it had already been packed hard creating a terrifying course. Lard went first, down the slope fast, gripping the sides of a large baking tray. Digger tried his luck with the lid of an old tin chest. Freddie decided to sit this one out.
Finally, Titch grabbed his red vinyl seat cushion. He descended like a missile and ended up in a heap in the deep powdery snow. Winner!
The other three teachers laughed!
