Advent stories
Power cut!
Everything was prepped. Then at precisely 11am, without a flicker, a total electrical power cut. No oven, hob, air fryer, bread maker, rice cooker, or kettle…. nothing!
What could we do? A great deal, as it turned out. The gas barbeque was wheeled up to the kitchen door. The wood fired pizza oven was put on a table next to it. The fire pit was lit and a frame created with three poles from our oil lamps. Then a chain upon which we dangled a cast iron pan to boil water. We got all the vegetables in there.
The turkey was butchered and filleted to create breast steaks and leg joints. The pizza oven did the breast meat; the barbeque took the legs and the ‘pigs in blankets.’
I took water from the vegetable pot and using my camping stove managed to mix gravy.
We decided to do an apple crumble in the pizza oven, with custard heated in a small pan over my camping stove.
We ate like kings and queens by candlelight, as the light of the day disappeared.
A ping from the cooker, hob and fridge indicated power was restored.
