Advent Stories
7. Die Hard is a Christmas film!
Taking place over the Christmas holidays, starting on Christmas Eve. There are scenes of people carrying presents and travelling to be home with loved ones. The main character even has a present, reuniting with his busy and successful wife and their children. The action begins as he arrives in the middle of a large office Christmas party. That is pretty Christmasy?!
There is music littering the film with Christmas cheer. Run DMC’s ‘Christmas in Hollis’ and the classic ‘Let it snow’ as the end credits roll.
In one particularly Christmasy scene, after a protracted and violent fight our hero manages to gain the upper hand and pushes his opponents head into the metal stairs as they tumble down, breaking his neck. The hero puts the corpse on a chair, a Santa hat on his head and writes on his chest; ‘Now I have a machine gun! Ho! Ho! Ho!’ sending the body down to the party. How festive is that?
Other subtle and not so subtle imagery and names give the film a very Christmasy feel. Even the hero’s wife is called ‘Holly’!
This is a fantastic Christmas film that just oozes the Merry Christmas message or alternatively.
‘Yippee-kai-yay, Motherf**ker!’
