Advent Stories
1. A Christmas tree.
Do we want a real tree this year? I already have a heavy cast iron stand with bolts to secure it, which I bought last year. Will it be one with those tiny little needles that start dropping before it is even out of the car. You lose another load when you start adding the decorations and lights.
What size am I going for? A sprig that will fit on the coffee table or something Trafalgar square rejected from the Norwegians. One year we had an eight-footer, which touched the ceiling (no room for a fairy) and had such girth that the sixty-five-inch television became background wallpaper.
The request this year is for more than one too! One in the lounge, with all the presents under it and one in the dining room, decorated with real chocolate coins and candy canes.
“Why not have one in each bedroom? Then we can stay in bed, and the kids can open their gifts from ‘you know who’ in their rooms and we get a lie in?”
I am being a ‘Scrooge.’ Apparently.
“Have you seen these lovely artificial ones, they come with decorations already attached?”
